→ Our History ←
  • Pre 1925

Alfred Moore II (AM) Scales from Ingleside, Reidsville, NC. Acquired over 7,000 acres purchased from Quaker Farmers to build what we know of today as the community of Hamilton Lakes.

  • 1929

At the beginning of the Great Depression, Edward B Benjamin (New Orleans LA) son in law of Bertha Sternberger foreclose on Hamilton Lakes and assumes control of the development.

  • 1927

Scales hired golf course architects Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek to design the Hamilton Lakes Golf Club and employs Ralph D Stout, HL civil engineer to build the golf course from the S&VK design.

  • 1938

Benjamin, and head golf pro, George Corcoran, conceived of the Greater Greensboro Open. Benjamin threw his considerable civic weight behind the project and Corcoran helped convince his brother, Fred, who was PGA Tour manager, to give Greensboro coveted dates on the tour. Sam Snead won the first GGO and went on to win the tournament 8 times . He still holds the PGA Tour record of 81 victories.

  • 1940

Ben Hogan’s second win on the PGA Tour was in Greensboro, the first two rounds played at Starmount. That was 1940, when it snowed out the tournament for three straight days the last week in March. Hogan called Starmount' s number 4 "the hardest 4-shotter in golf."

  • 1942

GGO Champion Sam Byrd, who once played baseball with Babe Ruth, is the only former major league baseball player ever to win on the PGA Tour.

  • 1945

Byron Nelson wins record 11 PGA events in a row, his 3rd win in the streak was the GGO at Starmount.

  • 1947

Hall of Famer, Betty Jameson was the first woman to break 300 for 72 holes of major competitive stroke play golf while winning the first women’s U.S. Open held at Starmount.

  • 1949

Hall-of-Famer Cary Middlecoff made 14 at the 12th hole at Starmount. He hit a 280-yard drive into the muddy bank in front of the green, finally got on in 11 and three-putted. He never returned to the GGO.

  • 1960

Sam Snead at the 5th Championship at Starmount... After the tournament, Snead was quoted as saying it was time for Benjamin to spend some of his money on the course. Professional golfers are bypassing the tournament due to lousy playing conditions. He did not mean to offend but "if Benjamin doesn't want the tournament, that is up to him, He can always make a housing project out of the course."

  • 1961

GGO moves to Sedgefield CC after Benjamin states he would rather not see Snead back at his course ever, and requested PGA censor him for outrageous comments. The tournament was always contested in May or April, either the weekend before the Masters or two weeks before the Masters.

  • 1977

The GGO shifted to Forest Oaks Country Club from 1977 tto 2007. Qualifying rounds are still played at SFCC.

  • 1994

Member, Kevin Kemp is NC Amateur Champion, All-ACC, Honorable Mention & All American.

  • 2007

Savio Nazareth, Assistant Club Pro, shoots course record 59 with 10 birdies and 1 eagle.

  • 2008

Carl Petterson: The Wyndham (GGO) is played at Sedgefield for the first time since 1976. Petterson, who grew up living on SFCC No. 18, was the 2008 Wyndham Champion. Peterson was also the 2000 European Amateur Champion and a 5 time PGA and 1 time European tour winner.
